SANDWICH

Sandwich, one of the original Cinque Ports, has many vessels moored alongside its ancient quays, with picturesque Barbican, Tollbridge and Fishergate reflecting the town’s medieval character. The complete town is a conservation area, retaining a wealth of attractive, old buildings within its maze of ancient streets and alleyways. There are three churches, St Clement’s, St Peter’s and St Mary’s, together with a 17th century United Reformed Church, next to the Guildhall. Strand Street has what is considered to be the longest continuous stretch of timber-framed buildings in the country. Large private houses include the 12th century ’Long House‘ together with ’Manwood Court‘ and ’The King’s Lodging‘, both dating from the 16th century.

The Town Walls, surrounding the medieval town, provide a pleasant walk, from which the visitor can see the compact pattern of the streets and the unique, ancient, tiled roofs. A museum reflecting the history of the town is incorporated within the Elizabethan Guildhall, which has regular, guided tours.
